F. K. Platter & Sons was operated by Frank K. Platter and his sons Frank K. Jr. and Ralph in the 1920's at 202 S. Broadway. Written on the back of the photo lists the men as "No. 1- Frank K. Platter, No. 2 - Frank K. Platter Jr. and No. 3 - Ralph Platter This is his grocery store in Pittsburg, Kans. Later Uncle Frank had a kraut biz. Shipped kraut and juice to Mayo Bros." Frank Sr. had worked in the grocery business for a long time before opening his own store in Pittsburg. In March of 1902 he closed his store in Arcadia and moved to Pittsburg to look for employement. He is listed in the 1908 city directory as working as a meat cutter at the Philemon Lodoux grocery at 602 E. 7th. In the 1912 city directory he is also listed as a meat cutter working for the P. E. Probst grocery at 702 N. Broadway. In the fall of 1917 he opened The East Side Market at 124 E. Third with his son Ralph where he became famous for his home made sauerkraut, evidenced by The Sun newspaper clippings below. Frank K. Platter Sr. and his wife Alice died 15 Dec 1937 from a gas leak in their home. They are buried in the Mt. Olive cemetery in Pittsburg.
