Argentina's Drive In was owned by Barney and Argentina Balma and was located at 3415 N. Broadway at the intersection of Atkinson and Broadway. It opened in about 1950 in a building next door to their home at 3413 N. Broadway as a drive in and changing to a supper club around 1960. Not sure how long it was open but their daughter Mary Jane (Balma) Cherry operated it for several years. Barney Balma was born in Corio, Italy in 1892 and came to America in 1909 first living in Livingston Co., IL working as a coal miner. By 1918 he was living in Frontenac working as a coal miner for the Jackson - Walker Coal & Mining Co. Barney died in 1970. Argentina was born in 1903 in Perugia, Italy coming to America at the age of 13 in 1916 with her parents Salvatore (1860-1932) and Lodavica (1864-1929). Argentina first married Joe Gammaitoni and had 2 sons. She married Barney in 1928 and had 2 daughters. Barney and Argentina are buried in the Mt. Olive Cemetery Abbey.
